OUR STORY

FROM PASSION ABOUT CRAFTSMANSHIP TO RECONNECTING BUYERS AND MAKERS OF FASHION.

Our story began when two university students discovered the intricacy of Mexican craftsmanship.
Today CANO preserves traditional Mexican craftsmanship by creating artisan-made products with care for people and planet.

HOW IT ALL STARTED

We are Philipp and Lukas, old high-school friends and the founders of CANO. Our story starts back in 2014 when we came to Mexico to study. Coming from Europe, we fell in love with Mexico’s vibrant culture, warm climate and delicious food. One thing stood out to us... The quality and passion behind the Mexican handcrafted huarache - a handmade leather sandal that dates all the way back to the Aztec empire.

OUR JOURNEY

THE SEARCH BEGINS

Even after we had already left Mexico, the huarache did not leave our minds. We decided we should bring the Mexican huarache and its craftsmanship to Europe. So, we packed our bags and traveled across Mexico.

The weaving technique of the Mexican sandals has been inherited and improved from generation to generation. But in a world by fast-fashion the artisans that still practice this century-old tradition are hard to find.

We eventually found the artisans that we were looking for in a small town in the central Mexican state of Michoacán. Since then, we made several trips to Mexico, held countless brainstorming sessions and put all our efforts into making our mission come true.

WHAT HAPPENED NEXT...

In 2018, we designed our first boot collection inspired by the traditional Mexican Charro Boots. We started our partnership with Hector’s small family business in Leon and launched our first designs. But that wasn't enough for us. We wanted to share more of Mexico's amazing crafts. So we continued exploring possibilities and found the artisans who currently make our jewelry and homeware.

By setting up these new supply chains in the most environmentally-friendly and fair way, we experienced how difficult it is to be transparent about your supply chains in an industry that operates behind closed doors. Many other sustainable brands are facing the same issue. That’s how our idea for retraced, a new transparency supply-chain start-up was born.
